Our first discussion topic! Yay!

And what better way to kick off than with the question: How did you get started with Gundam?

What was your first series? Did you start with a series, or maybe model kits? Browsed around a little? Maybe it was a fandom-first sort of thing?

If it's beginnings and you, feel free to share here.

Like a lot of people, Gundam Wing. Heero blowing up that shuttle
and then laughing like a lunatic sold it.

I had friends who were obsessed with Gundam Wing back when it was airing on Cartoon Network 2000-ish so I'm sure I caught an episode or two in there but never enough to qualify as memorable.

Fall Semester of 2001, I was doing live news production for the university cable channel and that... was a terrible semester for news. Terrorist attacks, a brand new war, anthrax, etc. By the end of the semester, I refused to watch news (and then any live action tv) at home, watching pretty much only Nick and Cartoon Network (and maaaaybe MTV2 now and then) and ended up pretty addicted to all the anime series being shown late-night on Cartoon Network.

And then they started showing Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory and I was hooked. First Gundam came next, though I don't think they ever finished airing it?

Current (2008-ish onward) fixation is thanks to Gundam 00 and Gundam SEED (and [personal profile] taichara. ^_^;

My first introduction to the Gundam franchise was Gundam Seed when it aired on YTV when I was in high school. I was hooked immediately, and was really sad whenever I wasn't able to watch an episode (luckily, a friend of mine always filled me in on what I missed the following Monday!). I still love Kira and Athrun's story, hate Flay, and am perfectly fine with ignoring the majority of Destiny.

Seed was my introducing to mecha in general, and I've seen some other mecha series since then, both Gundam and non-Gundam, including Age and Build Fighters.

Yep, it aired on YTV! I recall it airing sometime between 10 and 11 PM on Friday nights, with Inuyasha either right before or right after it - I believe both series had a 'for older audiences/viewer discretion is advised' warnings as well. Man, I haven't thought about YTV's anime lineup in years...

I couldn't remember, so I went and checked both the sub and the dub, and yes, the dub shows people being vaporized, the same as in the original. D:

And now I want to re-watch Seed subbed...

Neon spanglies? Now I'm wondering if Canada got a different edit than the US, since I don't remember those at all. Or maybe I've just intentionally forgotten it! XD (After all, I managed to make myself forget nearly all of Stardust Memory)

Ooh, thanks! I have a bunch of anime series on my plate at the moment, but I'll add it to my to watch list!

.... D: That's a hilariously terrible edit. Wow. I don't remember that at all, so we definitely got different editing than the States.

Is it too late to comment on this?

Like a lot of people, Gundam Wing when it was on Toonami. I enjoyed military warfare and history as a teenager (I wasn't allowed to go out with other kids, so I had to find ways to pass the time, and have always been a rather technical person). Regretfully, I did not fully understand some of the terminology and what was happening in the show. I don't think at the age I was when I first watched the show, that I could truly appreciate it for what it was.

Rewatching it now as an adult has been a very enjoyable and rewarding use of my limited leisure time.

I had the manga, despite my distaste for Koichi Tokita's art. I also enjoyed Blind Target and Ground Zero. Fandom was in its early days then, you had the folks with money who could buy their own webspace and URL, and the folks that didn't who hosted on Angelfire, Geocities and Lycos. (Yeah, I've been around the Internet block. Hell, I had been using the Internet regularly before those sites even became mainstream. And though I dislike disclosing my age online, I'm under thirty years old as of the writing of this comment.)

I had two model kits of Deathscythe and Deathscythe Hell, but my family had no regard for my things and allowed my little cousin (about three or four years old) to play with them without my permission. He destroyed them. Since then, I have felt ill-inclined to build a model, despite no longer sharing a household with small children. I do buy the Super Robot Series figures occasionally, though, and have one of Epyon and of the God Gundam (my favorite Gundam of all---well, God Gundam and Wing Zero Custom are my favorites).

I think I had an Angelfire site about Duo. I don't think it was very popular though. LOL.

Back then my version of Tumblr was a binder full of pictures and fanfic I had printed out and put in sheet protectors. I recently found out (via Tumblr of course) that I was not the only person who did this! I had a binder full of pictures of the Gundam Wing cast. I had an anime crush on Duo at the time. I mean, I had a BIG anime crush on Duo, like a lot of fangirls back then. My anime side piece (haha) was Treize. I think Treize still is my anime side piece, linebacker shoulders, forked eyebrows, manipulative personality and all.

Hmm, you don't say. Maybe I might indeed look into it. There are plenty of hobby shops in my area that seem to sell Gundam models for assembly. I always wanted the experience of hand-painting the model. For some reason, that always looked fun to me, like a labor of love.

ETA: Domon Kasshu was my other anime side piece. LOL. I think I liked Domon beause of the mobile trace suit, personally.
