Gundam Wing Silver Anniversary: Fandom Memories

Twenty-five years of Gundam Wing. What's your fondest memory? Were you there for mailing list wars, character quizzes, and arguing if the sub was better than the dub? Did you do all the pairing math or were you there for the mecha battles?

I think of all the excellent pairings, and mourn my doujinshi scan website.:( I met the_rev on the yahoo mailing lists! My fondest memory may be of watching GW with wystii in Australia, she staying up late and me getting up early to watch a few episodes "together". We had a blast, and I think we made it all the way through.

I literally met my best friend in college through Gundam Wing! Oh, the joys of carefully sussing out (in the late 1990s/early 2000s) what people thought about slash, then gleefully swapping fic recs once you figured out that it was "safe" to talk about it with them. I was never as deep into the online fandom as she was -- she spent a not insignificant portion of our college years on Gundam Wing Addiction, usually hunting for 1x2x1 fic -- but I always liked hearing about whatever she was reading. She also had the whole series on DVD, carefully picked up a disc at a time when individual DVD releases were the norm.

I haven't done cosplay in a while, but it's still a dream of mine to make a Colonel Une costume and walk around an anime con to see who still remembers the series.

Aah, the days of making folks instantly furious with me because I preferred (and still prefer) dub!Zechs, lol. And, frankly, all of the cast. Lol.

I wandered about many a site and lurked on mailing lists, but I kept on the down-low more then even more than now -- which would probably leave some blinking, ha ~

It has a really good dub! (And I think at this point, I'm not sure I have any interest in watching it subbed. The dub is just how it rolls.)

I probably had a printout of that picture of Zechs before I knew more about him than what show he came from...

I prefer the dub too. I tried to watch it subbed years later and it just sounded so wrong I couldn't get through more than a couple of episodes.

When I think of Gundam Wing, I think of a decade long of friendships I've formed in the fandom, the wonderful fanfics the fandom have and still offer, the music that brings me into a nostalgic trance at times and the amount of time most of the fans have grown to appreciate the medium that is Gundam Wing. Although the series had its flaws and its rather sketchy fandom sides, it was truly a remarkable series that came at the right time and probably made use of themes that would appeal to the vast majority of fandom and contributed to its rather huge popularity in the early 2000s.

Also, the pairing math was quite efficient hahahaha and I learned everything about basic fan etiquette through this fandom.
